From Singapore to Kuala Lumpur
A Practice-Driven Journey in Foreign-Related Rule of Law
Recently, Matthew G.S Ren, Managing Director of Liaoning Sun-land Law Firm, undertook a foreign-related legal exchange and corporate research trip to Singapore and Malaysia. Centered on cross-border e-commerce legal services and foreign-related lawyer training, the visit included in-depth exchanges with the Law Society of Singapore, the Malaysian Bar, the Kuala Lumpur Bar, the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), multiple law firms in both countries, and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Malaysia. Managing Director Ren also attended the 5th anniversary forum of AllBright Law Offices' Singapore office and visited Shandong Haihua, a cross-border e-commerce operator deeply rooted in Southeast Asia. During the trip, he advanced a key stage of a case concerning the recognition and enforcement of a London international arbitral award, putting Sun-land's cross-border dispute-resolution capability into practice.
I. Dialogue with the Frontier: Engaging the Law Society of Singapore and Leading Firms
Singapore is a core hub for Asia-Pacific international arbitration and cross-border transactions, and a vital window into global legal-service trends. During his stay, Managing Director Ren met with representatives of the Law Society of Singapore and visited LVM Law Chambers, Rajah & Tann Asia's Singapore office, WongPartnership, ADVOX LAW LLC, and Asia Practice LLC, holding multiple rounds of substantive exchanges with counterparts from each firm.
In a meeting at LVM Law Chambers, Managing Director Ren and a prominent Singapore international arbitrator exchanged in-depth views on the practical development of China-related international commercial arbitration and mediation. LVM Law Chambers is a boutique dispute-resolution firm whose China and Asia Practice has long handled China-related cross-border commercial litigation and arbitration, and is deeply involved in the arbitration practices of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) and the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC).

The visit also included Rajah & Tann Asia's Singapore office, establishing direct links with this Southeast Asia-wide regional firm network, where Managing Director Ren exchanged views with representatives of the Law Society of Singapore on topics including Liaoning's foreign-related lawyer training.

On August 26, Managing Director Ren attended a seminar co-hosted by King & Wood Mallesons, WongPartnership, and SIAC, focusing on dispute scenarios involving large-scale Chinese infrastructure investments in South and Southeast Asia that have encountered setbacks. The discussion analyzed the causes, risk points, and dispute-resolution pathways of cross-border investment disputes, examining geopolitics, host-country regulation, contract structuring, and international arbitration practice, providing practical legal references for going-global enterprises to identify major project risks and build dispute-response plans. At WongPartnership, Managing Director Ren exchanged views with partners on dispute resolution and compliance needs of Chinese-invested enterprises in Singapore. WongPartnership is among the largest law firms in Singapore and a member of the global law firm network World Law Group, consistently ranking at the forefront of the market in international arbitration, cross-border M & A, and capital markets. Managing Director Ren also visited ADVOX LAW LLC and Asia Practice LLC, exchanging on foreign-related lawyer training, cross-border investment, banking and finance, and compliance regulation.

Across these rounds of dialogue, the both sides exchanged views on international commercial arbitration, cross-border investment and M&A, cross-border IP protection, and the cultivation of foreign-related lawyers, reaching preliminary consensus on future collaboration in Belt and Road dispute resolution and compliance for Chinese enterprises going global. The dialogue broadened Sun-land's international perspective and connected Liaoning—and Chinese enterprises at large—with high-quality international legal resources.
II. Witnessing Peers Grow: The 5th Anniversary of AllBright's Singapore Office
During the visit, Managing Director Ren was invited to the 5th anniversary celebration of AllBright Law Offices' Singapore office. Held in Singapore on August 26, 2026, the anniversary forum, themed 'Riding the Wind and Waves — The Legal Challenges and Responses of Enterprises Going Global,' drew over 150 representatives from business associations, corporate executives, and the legal community, who discussed hot topics including Chinese outbound investment, overseas listing, cross-border dispute resolution, and international trade compliance.
Managing Director Ren congratulated his peers on their growth and explored topics such as regional legal market coordination and the joint development of cross-border legal service networks with overseas Chinese lawyers and representatives of Chinese-invested institutions present, further consolidating the cooperative foundation between Sun-land Law Firm and its overseas colleagues.

III. Building Bridges: Malaysia's Two-Tier Bar
Managing Director Ren and his party visited the Malaysian Bar and the Kuala Lumpur Bar in succession, conducting in-depth communication on the opening of the two countries' legal service sectors, cross-border practice collaboration among lawyers, and the prevention of legal risks in Malaysia-related investment, promoting the establishment of a regular exchange mechanism. The two organizations play distinct roles in industry governance and external exchange: the former is Malaysia's national bar organization, while the latter covers the Kuala Lumpur capital region.

Managing Director Ren also visited the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Malaysia, learning about the Embassy's functions and channels in guiding Liaoning's foreign-related lawyer training, protecting the lawful rights and interests of Chinese-invested enterprises, and assisting with foreign-related legal affairs, thereby providing policy guidance and support pathways for Chinese foreign-related lawyers to better serve enterprises and compatriots investing in Malaysia.

IV. Focusing on Industry Hotspots: Cross-Border E-Commerce Legal Needs
One of the core agendas of this visit was to identify the real legal needs of cross-border e-commerce enterprises 'going global.' Managing Director Ren and his party visited Christopher & Lee Ong in Malaysia, exchanging views on legal service collaboration for enterprises operating across China and Malaysia; in addition, through Allen & Gledhill (Singapore), Managing Director Ren communicated and coordinated with its Malaysian affiliate Rahmat Lim & Partners on specific case cooperation.

Subsequently, the delegation visited Shandong Haihua, a cross-border e-commerce operator deeply rooted in the Southeast Asian market. Haihua is a leading enterprise in the overseas warehousing sector, with its operations strongly supported by the Shandong provincial government; Managing Director Ren also exchanged with the head of a visiting South Korean overseas-warehousing enterprise at Haihua.
At Ricky Tan & Co, Managing Director Ren learned that the firm is also deeply engaged in cross-border e-commerce, serving as a 'law + industry' dual-practice exemplar. During the research, Managing Director Ren gained first-hand understanding of the practical challenges enterprises face in platform compliance, overseas warehouse operations, consumer rights protection, cross-border data flows, intellectual property, and tax planning.

The research found that cross-border e-commerce enterprises commonly face three major pain points: 'fragmented rules, high dispute-resolution costs, and difficult local compliance.' In response, Sun-land Law Firm will leverage the outcomes of this research to develop specialized legal service products for cross-border e-commerce, helping enterprises achieve steady and sustained growth.
V. Testing Professionalism through Practice: A London Arbitral Award
The true measure of professional capability ultimately lies in case handling. During this trip, Managing Director Ren also handled a key stage of a case concerning the recognition and enforcement of a British London international arbitral award. This stage involved the procedural pathway and evidence organization for a foreign arbitral award to obtain judicial recognition in China, demanding a high level of the handling lawyers' private international law foundation and cross-border coordination ability.
In Kuala Lumpur, Managing Director Ren also visited the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC). Formerly the Kuala Lumpur Regional Arbitration Centre (KLRCA) established in 1978 with the support of the Asian–African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO), AIAC is one of the most influential permanent arbitral institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. The two sides exchanged views on foreign-related lawyer training, cross-border commercial dispute resolution, arbitral procedure collaboration, and arbitrator resource sharing.
